Choosing Your Car Insurance – Part 1

Car insurance… That necessary evil.

Driving is never guaranteed safe. You may be the safest driver in the world and get an award for it, but if you’re on the same road as a reckless driver, you’re immediately at risk. Of course thankfully, even the most reckless drivers are required to carry insurance as well.

We’re all required to have car insurance. Why not save money on it?

Let’s look at some different types of insurance.

Liability – This is the most common kind of car insurance. It deals with the damages caused by accidents where you as the driver are at fault. No matter how careful, we all have that unavoidable moment where we lose control while driving. It may just be sleepiness or depression… but you find yourself waking up in the hospital.

Comprehensive Coverage – This is the most complete type of car insurance. It means that the insurance company will take care of your car no matter who’s at fault. This would include car repairs for any reason. In some cases, they also cover the medical bills of all the passengers in the car. So it’s great for the family. You can cut your expenses, but not your own safety. Try to go with a well-established insurance company that’s been in business for years. They have their reputation to protect and they will take care of you.

Additionally, comprehensive coverage is a good option for those who acquire their cars through a car loan program. That’s because if your car has debt, this car policy will pay the loaned amount in full and then they will deal with your new car. But if the car is repairable, they’ll pay for the repair of the car, while the loan amount is still your responsibility. In some cases they do join both insurance items so the buyer gets total protection with no hassle.

Whatever you choose, the rule of the insurance game is: compare, compare, compare. Check on all details of the coverage and the cost breakdown. Get as close to complete coverage as you possibly can. And remember you can always negotiate prices, especially after you have some time with a particular insurance agency.
